My Mothers Day Gift

Do you believe in knowing, without knowing why? Some people will never believe, but I’ve lived it, and I swear to you it’s true.

Besides my Husband and Children, my horses are my greatest joy, when everything else seems bad, a few stolen hours in the barn or pasture with my girls, and my world is right.

During foaling season, I’m a wreck, I calculate the dates and check my mares constantly. Most will give you signs if only you know how to look. But maidens can be tricky, and such it was with Lizzy.  Every day, several times a day, I would check her. No changes, no bag, nothing, but she wasn’t too close so no worries…

On a Saturday night, I checked her late as my husband and I had gone on a date, all was normal, and we went to bed. The next morning was mother’s day, which means I can stay in bed, No getting up to feed, breakfast in bed, a luxury I rarely get anymore. But early that morning I woke from a sound sleep and a dream that seemed so real. I got up and began dressing in the near dark early morning, My husband telling me to go back to sleep, the kids would want to make breakfast soon. But not at the “butt crack of dawn” as my daughter would call this hour.

I finished dressing and told him I’d had a dream, If I was wrong I’d be back in bed and they’d never even know I had been up . Out into the misty morning I ventured, but my dream was right, in dew dampened grass laying at Lizzy’s feet was an even damper foal. I ran back inside, soaked fuzzy slippers and all, and woke everyone up…

My mare Lizzy had managed to trump even breakfast in bed with a dessert of Godiva Chocolate. I didn’t even know that such a thing was possible!
